‘Tis the Season for Fresh Apples

On this page you will find my recipe for Fresh Apple Crisp, using the current season’s crop of new apples. Autumn is harvest time for them because that’s when they are at the peak of their flavor. We all know how satisfying it is to bite into a apple that’s crisp and crunchy. They’re such a delight, unlike anything else in the world. All those beautiful blossoms you saw on the apple trees in the spring made way for these beauties and we should take full advantage of their deliciousness.

Why Make Apple Crisp With Fresh Apples?

A few years ago I invited some friends to dinner and one of the men asked “Will there be apple crisp?” He was visibly disappointed when I had to say no. But it wasn’t the right season and I would have had to use bruised and flavorless apples that had long lain in the grocery produce bin orΒ  canned apple pie filling. I just couldn’t do it! Once you’ve tasted Apple Crisp made with fresh apples of the season you will always seek that flavor. You will become convinced, as I am, that fresh is best. As for my friend, eventually, he got the apple crisp he asked for that next Autumn.

Yummy But Easy Recipe

This is possibly one of the easiest recipes you’ll ever make and because of that you may make it several times from this Autumn’s apples. The recipe only makes an 8″ square baking dishΒ  so if you plan on serving more than five people, you should double the recipe and put it in a 9X13-inch baking dish. Put it in the oven and let it bake while you’re finishing up preparations for your meal. Then serve it warm, with a dollop of whipped cream, or a scoop of ice cream. Mmmmmmm!

Ingredients:

  • 5 peeled sliced apples
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In an 8-inch baking dish, mix peeled, chopped apples with lemon juice, coating apples well. This is to keep them from browning before they’re baked.
  3. In a large bowl, place oats, brown sugar, salt, flour and cinnamon (if using.)
  4. Using your clean hands, work butter into the oats and brown sugar mixture until it is crumbly and well combined.
  5. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over apples and bake about 30-45 minutes or until apples are tender. The crispy oatmeal streusel is the “crisp” part of the Apple Crisp.
  6. Serve warm plain, or with whipped cream or ice cream.
